Internship Opportunities
New Brunswick Counseling Center (NBCC) and Burlington Comprehensive Counseling (BCC) welcome master’s-level students in Counseling and Social Work who want hands-on, trauma-informed, client- and family-centered training in outpatient mental health and substance use care.
We serve New Jersey from two locations—New Brunswick and Mount Holly—and work closely with students from NJ universities and Fordham University.
What you’ll Learn (and Do)
With close supervision and a gradual ramp-up, interns typically gain experience in:
Intake & assessment
Individual & group counseling
Treatment planning
Care coordination
Co-occurring care exposure
Documentation & EHR
Training and practice in compliant, timely notes (including HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2).
Supervision, Training, and Support
- Weekly individual supervision with an LCSW or LPC field instructor.
- Weekly group supervision/case conference with multidisciplinary feedback.
- Protected training hours (on the schedule) covering: Motivational Interviewing, CBT skills, trauma-informed care, suicide risk assessment, cultural humility, confidentiality (HIPAA/42 CFR Part 2), co-occurring treatment basics, documentation quality, and telehealth best practices.
- Ongoing skills labs (e.g., safety planning, crisis de-escalation, boundaries/ethics).
- Opportunities to contribute to quality-improvement projects or program development.
Our Training Philosophy
We follow the core principles of trauma-informed care—safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment—and we practice cultural humility. Your voice, identity, and learning goals matter. Bilingual interns (especially Spanish/English) are strongly encouraged to apply.
Who Should Apply
- MSW and Clinical Mental Health Counseling (MA/MS) students seeking practicum or internship placements.
- Reliable, reflective learners who value equity, harm reduction, and client choice.
- Students able to commit to a consistent weekly schedule (most placements are 16–24 hours/week; we’ll align with your program’s requirements).
- Some roles may require evening hours for groups; telehealth opportunities vary by rotation and readiness.
Note: Internship hours satisfy university field requirements. Post-degree licensure hours (e.g., LSW → LCSW, LAC → LPC) are separate and occur after graduation.
